National Memorial to the Heroes of the Heydrich Terror

Popis: NATIONAL MEMORIAL TO THE HEROES OF THE HEYDRICH TERROR (NÁRODNÍ PAMÁTNÍK HRDINŮ HEYDRICHIÁDY) The National Memorial to the Heroes of the Heydrich Terror is one of Prague's most important World War II memorials. It is located inside the Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius on Resslova Street. On May 27, 1942, two Czechoslovak paratroopers, Jozef Gabčík and Jan Kubiš, carried out Operation Anthropoid, an assassination attempt against Reinhard Heydrich, one of the highest-ranking Nazi officials and a principal architect of the Holocaust. Heydrich died from his injuries on June 4, 1942. After the attack, seven Czechoslovak paratroopers found refuge inside the church, hiding in its underground crypt. However, their hiding place was betrayed. On June 18, 1942, German SS and Gestapo forces surrounded the church. After several hours of fierce fighting, all seven paratroopers died rather than surrender to the Nazis. The assassination triggered brutal Nazi reprisals, including the destruction of the Czech villages of Lidice and Ležáky and the murder of many innocent civilians. WHAT CAN YOU SEE? Visitors can explore the original underground crypt, where the paratroopers made their final stand. The memorial features historical photographs, documents, personal stories, and bronze busts of the seven heroes. Outside the church, you can still see bullet marks around the crypt window, a powerful reminder of the battle on June 18, 1942. OPENING HOURS - Tuesday–Sunday: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM - Monday: Closed - Last admission: 4:30 PM ADMISSION: FREE FOR EVERYONE! MY RECOMMENDATION Allow approximately 30–45 minutes to explore the exhibition and crypt. This is a deeply moving place and highly recommended for visitors interested in World War II, Czech resistance, and the fight against Nazi occupation.
