New World (Nový svět)

Prague Map Tour for the Deaf Community

New World (Nový svět)

Popis: Nový Svět (meaning "New World") is one of the most charming, romantic, and paradoxically quiet corners of Prague. Located in the Hradčany district, it lies just a short walk from the bustling Prague Castle. History & Origins: It originated in the 14th century as a suburb for castle servants and the poor. The current layout of winding lanes and quaint houses mostly dates back to the reconstruction following a major fire in 1541. The "Golden" House Names: Because the local residents were poor, they compensated for their lack of wealth by giving their homes proud names. Almost every house sign includes the word "golden" (e.g., At the Golden Griffin, At the Golden Pear, At the Golden Bush). Famous Residents: At the turn of the 17th century, the famous Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe lived at the house At the Golden Griffin. In modern history, it has been a favorite sanctuary for artists, including film director Jan Švankmajer and painter Jan Zrzavý. Atmosphere: Nový Svět has perfectly preserved the atmosphere of old Prague. It is defined by narrow cobblestone streets, low-rise houses, and the old city walls (the Marian Walls) framing the area. Free from major shops and tourist crowds, it offers cozy local cafes and absolute tranquility. It is the perfect place to escape the crowds and take a walk through a neighborhood where time seems to have stood still.
