Popis: JEWISH QUARTER – JOSEFOV (ŽIDOVSKÁ ČTVRŤ) Josefov, Prague's historic Jewish Quarter, was first mentioned as a Jewish settlement in 1096. Following the Fourth Lateran Council in 1215, which introduced measures separating Jews from Christians, the district gradually developed into a Jewish ghetto. For centuries, Josefov was home to Prague's Jewish community, with its own synagogues, schools, cemetery, and town hall. After the abolition of the Jewish ghetto in the 19th century, the area gradually became an overcrowded and impoverished neighbourhood. During the great urban redevelopment of Prague (Pražská asanace) in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, most of the old Jewish Quarter was demolished and replaced with modern buildings and wide streets. Fortunately, several important Jewish monuments survived, including the Old-New Synagogue, several other historic synagogues, the Old Jewish Cemetery, and the Jewish Town Hall. Today, Josefov is one of Prague's most important historical districts, preserving more than 900 years of Jewish history and cultural heritage
