Petřín

Popis: Petřín is one of the most famous, greenest, and most romantic hills in Prague. Rising right in the city center next to the Malá Strana (Lesser Town) district, it is a favorite spot for leisure, walks, and scenic views. The Funicular: A historic funicular railway has been carrying passengers to the top since 1891 as part of Prague’s public transport system. (Note: The funicular has been undergoing a major modernization and car replacement project between 2024 and 2026). Landmarks & Attractions: Aside from the iconic Petřín Lookout Tower, the hill features a popular Mirror Maze housed in a pavilion resembling a Gothic gate, the Baroque Church of St. Lawrence, and the Štefánik Observatory. The Hunger Wall: The hill is intersected by a medieval fortification called the Hunger Wall (Hladová zeď), built in the 14th century by Charles VIII to provide employment and livelihood for the city's poor during a famine. Gardens & Orchards: Petřín is covered in vast green spaces, including a breathtaking Rose Garden, the Seminary Garden with thousands of fruit trees, and the charming Kinský Garden featuring a small waterfall. The May 1st Tradition: Petřín is a traditional symbol of lovers. Every year on May 1st (the Czech day of love), couples gather at the monument of the romantic poet Karel Hynek Mácha to kiss under a blossoming tree.
