Popis: UNGELT – TÝN COURTYARD (TÝNSKÝ DVŮR) Ungelt, also known as Týn Courtyard, is one of Prague's oldest historic trading centres, located behind the Church of Our Lady before Týn, near Old Town Square. Its origins date back to the 12th century, when it served as a fortified courtyard for foreign merchants arriving in Prague. Merchants brought goods from across Europe and were required to pay customs duties, known as Ungelt in medieval German. In return, they received protection from the king. The courtyard contained warehouses, stables, accommodation for merchants, and trading facilities. Merchants also had to surrender their weapons when entering. Ungelt reached its greatest prosperity during the 14th century under Charles IV. One of its most beautiful buildings is the Granovský Palace, a Renaissance palace from the 16th century, famous for its elegant arcades, decorative sgraffito, and wall paintings. Today, Ungelt is a peaceful historic courtyard surrounded by 18 buildings, with restaurants, cafés, and shops.
